Alexandra Karpiak

Major: Neuroscience

Concentration: Pre-Med

Class of 2024

Why did you choose Scranton?

I chose Scranton because of its good programs, welcoming community, and excellent location. Scranton impressed me with their knowledgeable, published professors and friendly student body. The dining options were a plus.

What do you like about the neuroscience major?

As a Neuroscience major, I am required to take biology and psychology classes in addition to our neuroscience classes. I like the variety of psychology classes and how the professors push students to excel using proven teaching methods.

What research are you doing at Scranton?

I am doing research with Dr. Buxton from the Nursing Department on maternal Postpartum Depression (PPD). I want to investigate the patient-healthcare provider relationship and how that may act as a protective factor in cases of PPD.

Tell us about your internship.

In the Spring 2023 semester, I interned at Turning Point, an outpatient addiction rehabilitation center, located in downtown Scranton. I observed and co-led group therapy sessions. I also wrote progress notes in the electronic health record on the client’s well-being, response to therapy, and steps to recovery.

What was your Teaching Assistantship like?

I am a Teaching Assistant for Dr. Norcross's Fall 2023 Clinical Psychology course. I enjoy peer-reviewing student papers, creating questions for quizzes, grading quizzes, teaching class material, and acting as a resource for students.

What are your extracurricular activities?

I am a Resident Assistant, Co-VP of Presentations for the Health Professions Organization, involved in the University Honors Program, performing research in the Nursing department, Orientation Assistant, Nu Rho Psi Honor Society Vice President, involved in Tri-Beta Honor Society, and a Clinical Psychology Teaching Assistant.
