Patrick Dawid
Majors: Neuroscience and Philosophy
Class of 2022
Why did you choose Scranton?
I chose Scranton due to the opportunities to get involved with faculty research.
What did you like about the majors?
I loved the Neuroscience major because of its flexibility. It is coordinated by the Psychology and Biology departments. Neuroscience majors have the freedom to take classes and conduct research in a variety of academic disciplines, ranging from chemistry to biology to psychology. My Philosophy major also proved invaluable to me over my college career.
Tell us about your internship.
I did an internship with the Scranton School District, working with a school psychologist. I observed psychological testing, interpreted data from assessments, and gained a greater understanding of special education. What I most enjoyed about this experience was that I saw the material from my coursework "come to life" in a real-world clinical setting.
What was your Teaching Assistantship like?
I served as a TA for Clinical Psychology. I learned much from this experience, including evidence-based methods of assessment and teaching strategies. I also conducted several lectures on my own (a somewhat terrifying but fruitful experience). Importantly, the assistantship created excitement about me teaching in the future.
How did the Psychology program prepare you for the real world?
My psychology courses thoroughly prepared me to pursue graduate school. These courses made me a competitive applicant and provided me with the foundational knowledge to pursue an advanced degree in psychology. Likewise, my experiences as a student researcher in the Psychology Department have been invaluable.
What are you up to now?
I am in the Clinical Psychology Ph.D. program at St. John’s University.
