Peter Orloff

Major: Psychology

Class of 2023

Why did you choose Scranton?

I chose Scranton because of its friendly community and the abundant careers after graduation. I hoped to be a fair distance from home while on a smaller but open campus, which Scranton fit perfectly. Additionally, students and faculty were incredibly welcoming during my visits to the U.

What did you like about the psychology major?

I liked the psychology professors and enjoyed much of the class content. I chose the psychology major because I found the connection between thoughts and behavior to be incredibly interesting. The smaller class sizes permitted me to know fellow students and my professors well.

What research did you do at Scranton?

I participated in research with Dr. Warker. We planned and developed a working memory lab -- analyzing how people remember auditory, visual, and semantic information through shapes, music, and sentences (including jokes).

Tell us about your internship.

I worked at Scranton Counseling Center in outpatient services for people with serious mental health disorders. I observed psychotherapy and facilitated group discussions to reduce mental health symptoms.

What were your extracurricular activities?

I was involved in ECSU (club ultimate frisbee) and previously served as team Secretary. I was also a member of Psychology Club. I served as both a member and president of the University’s chapter of Psi Chi (the International Honor Society in Psychology).

How did the psychology program prepare you for the real world?

Coursework in psychology gave me access to the impressive career options for graduate school and employment. In addition, the psychology program broadened my perspective on how people think, behave, and communicate.

What are you up to now?

I am seeking full-time employment in either Human Resources or Admissions Counselor roles. I am confident that my hard work and persistence will pay off.
