From April 21 through May 12, the Hope Horn Gallery at the �ձ�һ��Ƭ in Scranton, PA will present Pyrrhic Defeat: A Visual Study of Mass Incarceration by Mark Loughney. This installation will include 771 pencil portraits drawn during twenty-minute sittings throughout Loughney’s ten-year incarceration. Approached as a process of marking penal time, the Pyrrhic Defeat series depicts imprisoned individuals with a sense of humanity often lost in the prison system. The series title refers to “Pyrrhic defeat theory,” which is the idea that those with the power to make sensible changes to the criminal justice system benefit from the way it currently works. The exhibition will also feature artifacts on loan from the Lackawanna Historical Society and other local collections.

The exhibition will begin on Friday, April 21, 2023 with a Panel Discussion in the Pearn Auditorium, Brennan Hall 228, from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m., followed by a Gallery Reception at the Hope Horn Gallery, Hyland Hall 407, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Moderated by Michael Jenkins, Ph.D, Chair and Professor, Department of Criminal Justice, Cybersecurity, and Sociology, and Executive Director, Center for the Analysis and Prevention of Crime, �ձ�һ��Ƭ, Scranton, PA, the Panel Discussion will consider issues of overcrowding in the prison system and reentry strategies following incarceration. Panelists will include Mark Loughney, exhibiting artist, Philadelphia, PA; Sean Kelley, Senior Vice President and Director of Interpretation at the Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site, Philadelphia, PA; Jasmine Heiss, Project Director of In Our Backyards, Vera Institute of Justice, Brooklyn, NY; Jack Norton, Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice, Governors State University, University Park, IL; and Glynis Johns, Founder and CEO of the Black Scranton Project, Scranton, PA.

An additional Gallery Reception will be held on First Friday, May 5, 2023, at the Hope Horn Gallery, Hyland Hall 407, from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. Weekly gallery hours are Sunday through Friday, 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. and Wednesday evenings, 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. The public is invited to attend.

Pyrrhic Defeat: A Visual Study of Mass Incarceration is presented with support from the Ellacuría Initiative of the Jesuit Center; the Faculty Initiatives Fund of the Office of Community-Based Learning; a Diversity Initiatives Grant from the Office of Equity and Diversity; and the Office of Community Relations at the �ձ�һ��Ƭ, Scranton, PA. Loughney’s work has also been exhibited in the group show Marking Time: Art in the Age of Mass Incarceration at MOMA PS1, Long Island City, NY; the David Winton Bell Gallery, Brown University, Providence, RI; and the Zimmerli Art Museum, Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ; and has received critical attention in Artforum; Forbes; and the Paris Review.

Please join us for an Ellacuría Initiative Sponsored Event- "Title 42: Justice at the Border" on March 2, 2023, from 4:00-6:00 pm in The Kane Forum, Edward Leahy Hall (ELH), 2^nd Floor. The event will begin with an introduction to Title 42 and the KINO Border Initiative, followed by a background of the historical context of migration in Scranton and the impact on people at the US-Mexico Border. Discussion will be facilitated by the �ձ�һ��Ƭ Graduate Students from the Counseling and Human Services Department.

The purpose of this campus community event is to raise awareness of the various perspectives and issues related to migration, border restrictions, and the impact on the lives of humans at the US-Mexico Border. These discussions are meant to explore human issues of (in)justice from various disciplinary perspectives, seeking to understand and emanate cura personalis and to continue our work toward a more just and inclusive society. Sessions will be held in the KANE FORUM in Edward Leahy Hall, 2^nd Floor Auditorium from 4:00-6:00 pm on March 2, 2023. The schedule is above. Registration is encouraged, but we welcome walk-ins on the day of the event.
